Communication Tips for Working with China
- WeChat > Email > Phone. WeChat is the #1 business communication tool in China. Response time: minutes. Email: 12–24 hours. Ask for your supplier's WeChat ID early.
- Don't call unannounced. Send a WeChat message first: "Can I call you in 10 minutes?" Chinese business culture prefers scheduled calls.
- Record everything in writing. After a call, send a WeChat/email summary: quantities, prices, delivery dates. Verbal agreements don't hold.
- Respect lunch break. 12:00–1:30 PM CST is sacred. Don't schedule calls during this window.
- Use simple English. Your supplier's English may be intermediate. Short sentences, no idioms, confirm numbers in writing.

What time zone is China in?
All of China uses China Standard Time (CST / UTC+8). Unlike the US or Australia, China has no daylight saving time and no multiple time zones. When it's 9 AM in Shanghai, it's 9 AM in Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Yiwu, and everywhere else in China.
What are Chinese factory working hours?
Standard office/factory hours: 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM or 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Many factories also run Saturday mornings (8:30 AM – 12:00 PM). During peak season, overtime shifts run until 8–9 PM. Your sales contact may respond on WeChat outside office hours.
Can I call Chinese suppliers on weekends?
Regular weekends: usually no (offices closed). But China has 'makeup workdays' (调休) where certain Saturdays/Sundays are official workdays. On these days, your supplier IS available. Check our calendar — the next makeup workday might be this weekend.
What's the best way to contact Chinese suppliers?
WeChat is #1 in China — faster than email, and most suppliers check it constantly. For first contact, use Alibaba's messaging system. For ongoing communication, ask for their WeChat ID. Email works but expect 12–24 hour response times. Phone calls are best for urgent matters during business hours.
